The Issues Of Modern Female Character Design

bad character design

This lovely character design of an angry little kid is from a collection of drawings of children in costumes. This Danny Trejo-looking character comes from the portfolio of the incredibly talented Aleksey Baydakov who specializes in character design. The artist plays around with shapes and exaggerated anatomy, creating memorable cartoons. We also have this very stressed out Eskimo character by Pato Artist with extreme faces of annoyance, fear, anger, confusion, and shame. It’s a cute cartoon character design that instantly grabs the attention with its personality.

However, he appeared as a playable character for the first time in Street Fighter V. His original design compared to his current design just has a few uncanny differences. As a fan of wacky cartoon designs, this is probably the best section for me and hopefully, you’ll enjoy the crazy awesome designs as much as I do. This old-school classic rock character by Afmed Nonu, for example, has the old-time cartoon network feel that we rarely see these days. I know literally nothing about character design and made a Cupid oc for Rise of the Guardians a while back. It’s less detailed than I imagined it in my head cuz I suck at recreating what I imagine lol.

Nine great YouTube channels for aspiring anime and manga artists

However, this is more about his outfit and how horrid yellow looks on Rufus. For a fighting game, it’s hard to take Rufus as a serious character rather than a bit of a joke. But hey, if he feels comfortable wearing that silly outfit while trying to kick his opponent’s ass, more power to him, we suppose. He rides around in the mouth of some large creature along with his dogs and fights people from the safety of its mouth. First, we don’t even want to imagine how badly it smells there. Second, you’ll need to take a few good looks at the character to even figure out what’s happening in the sprite.

Howard Marks - 'Joker Game'

Learn more on their YouTube channel, on Brent Noll’s website, or on Maximus Pauson’s website. By keeping these tips in mind, you can create well-rounded characters that don't rely solely on their looks to make an impression. I do recommend learning a bit of color theory so it’s easier to understand color and combine them. But even if you prefer to use dark or less saturated colors, it’s important to pay attention to the contrast between them, so your character colors won’t mix into each other.

I hate to pick on Final Fantasy again, but it can be a series full of highs and lows in character design. A great example of color choice being a real flaw in a character design is the case of Eiko from Final Fantasy IX. As we can see, her mouth is put in a very, confusing and offputting place. The ears, separated from the head, aren’t an issue - they are more or less in the right spot, and we can buy the logic of the separation as part of a style.

Kid Characters

Studios like Disney and Pixar all have talented character designers that are geared toward animated storytelling. There are, however, various types of animation that character designers design for. Learn more about animation and the various types that exist in our next article. A common and effective approach is to begin by sketching silhouettes.

Lack of Unique Personality Traits

The argument is that women, when allowed to be in video games and are in positions of import, must be attractive. This is also disguised as “approachable” from time to time. It’s why Shelob has a human form and why Mileena wears a face mask most of the time.

Last in this category, here comes the baby monster and its dog. These designs already tell the story of a world where everyone and everything is a monster. And for the last example, this cartoon witchy girl combines exaggerated female silhouette with great detail. Witches are another awesome trend for characters everybody loves. We start with this lovable friendly witch with short jeans and really cool socks. The cute android has simple shapes, big camera lens eyes, and small antennas.

But what we hate even more than long production times and waiting is low-effort, half-baked games. Most of the time, the combat system doesn’t feel developed, the game is buggy on its own, and the bad character design really stands out. It's easy to subconsciously let our favourite designs influence us.

In that case, I’d even be hesitant to label character designs as “bad” because you can always build on those foundations. Same as male characters, female ones come in many shapes and sizes but the majority of female characters come with the typical exaggerated feminine hourglass silhouette. Here we have a good character design example of a city girl and her adorable little dog.

These design choices, and those similar to them, greatly hurt the industry in terms of that representation. Which anime characters suffer from the worst anime character designs? While some of it is down to personal preference, some are almost universally unsettling. Karin Hanazono's wide-set eyes are so cringe-worthy that she could probably show up as an example in a Twitter thread about why anime should be abolished. Meanwhile, some people enjoy CLAMP's noodley character designs, but other people find them wildly unappealing.

The characters had to be modified from the books, such as giving legs to Mr. Shark, voiced by Craig Robinson. The texture of the characters was influenced by the environmental lighting. Pierre Perifel wanted to create a new animation style that combined influences of Hayao Miyazaki and Ernest & Celestine. In the meantime, if you feel inspired, there’s more where that came from.

To avoid your own character-based controversies, you'll want to check out our character design masterclass. But first, here are the four most controversial character design stories of the year. It's also a good idea to look beyond character designs when hunting for inspiration. The process of creating a character design is often full of hurdles.

Additionally, I wanted to maintain a little more detail in his mouth and chin. While the goatee is simpler, I added a hint of cheekbones and kept the defined upper lip. While inking the character, my goal was to lock in some details that provide some interest to the design. I also wanted to make sure those details did not overwhelm the design either.

In the world of visual arts and animation, artists have the opportunity to create characters from absolute scratch. This allows them to use every aspect of design to create a unique character. Check out the video below to better understand how character design is geared more toward storytelling rather than solely creating a great drawing.

Dora maintains strength as a Category 4 hurricane as it passes south of Kauai

Learn more about Trilogy's involvement with the Community & Environment. With over 30 years of experience, we pride ourselves on safe and fun adventure. For more information, please read our snorkeling safety tips regarding snorkel masks. December is when the whales arrive, and they are not in full numbers until mid-January.

What is the best place to see whales on Maui?

It is quite an exciting experience to watch them as they wrestle with each other for the position to mate. Discover West Maui’s beauty with South Pacific Kayaks on a guided kayak and snorkeling tour. Paddle along the Olowalu or Ukumehame Coastline, encountering Green Sea Turtles and tropical fish. Ideal for families, the tour covers approximately 1.5 miles of kayaking, offering snorkeling opportunities with marine life. Gear, snacks, and beverages are provided; just bring swimwear, a towel, and sunscreen.

Male humpback whale competitive pods can be very aggressive, with head slapping, tail slapping, and breaching upon each other sometimes resulting in bloodshed. North Pacific humpback whales can weigh anywhere between tons (50,000-80,000 lbs), and approximately 1-ton (2,000 lbs) as newborns. They can grow up to 60 feet in length, with the females being the larger sized of the breed.

Maui’s Whale-watching Season

West Maui kayaking tours start at Ukumehame Beach Park less than 10 miles south of Lahaina. The tour paddles along Ukumehame beach through one of Maui’s best reef areas. They prefer relatively shallow waters of less than 600 feet, which is what they find and enjoy in the Maui Nui Basin. Most whale watching tours will leave from Lahaina, Ma’alaea, or Wailea. During your whale watching tour, you’ll get more than just amazing views of the Maui coastline and a front-row seat to whale breaches.

Take a whale watching tour out of Lahaina Harbor to get your day off to a good start. On this Maui whale watching cruise, get a thrilling glimpse of the undersea world. This article covers everything you must know before booking tickets for the whale watching cruise in Maui. The private boat can hold up to 6 passengers in your party and the tour is completely customizable to your liking. We were able to move around the boat freely and it quickly became one of my favorite and most memorable experiences on the water. Maui Custom Charters takes care of a light breakfast and lunch, the snorkeling equipment (if needed), and the route.

Best time to go on Maui Whale Watching Cruise

It is not uncommon for the whales to approach us as we sit idle in the water. Close encounters initiated by the whales are common on a whale watching tour on Maui. Whale watching on Maui is as good as it gets, with the opportunity on any given trip to see numerous animals displaying a variety of interesting and memorable behaviors. Newborn calves, in addition to being adorable, are curious and often bring mom up to the boat for a close encounter. As a protected animal, it is unlawful to approach these majestic animals at a distance of less than 100 yards during a Maui whale watch and we adhere strictly to these regulations.

Enjoy unlimited drinks from the open bar as you cruise alongside these magnificent marine giants. It’s a family-friendly adventure in a premier whale watching destination. While it’s highly likely to spot whales on Maui whale watching tours, there are no guarantees. The best time for sightings is during the peak whale season, roughly from December to March, when whales have finished migrating, are giving birth, and nursing their young. However, weather, whale behavior, and sheer luck can influence your chances.

With only 20 passengers, you’ll enjoy better views and photos of these majestic creatures. Following local reports, your captain ensures you get as close as possible for a fantastic wildlife experience. Join Calypso Charters for a 2-hour whale watching voyage on their triple-deck power catamaran.

Their 1.5 hour whale-watching tour runs from January to the end of March and they offer 3-morning tours each day. Their raft holds 24 people or less, so you don’t have to fight over the best seat on the boat. You’ll be treated to a morning coffee as you take a relaxing sail out of the harbor. During the two-hour tour, the crew will motor to find you the best whale sightings.

Register and enjoy smoother booking, as well as being able to save your wish list and recently viewed activities. To increase your chances of spotting whales whilst in Maui, I’d recommend going out early in the morning (before 8am) as this is when the whale numbers area their highest. It is actually a very popular surfing destination but many people also come to the park to see whales. You’ll be able to see the whales from a distance e.g. you’ll likely see a huge splash and a gray lump but that’s about it. You can bring your camera to capture the breathtaking moments during the cruise.

During this 2-hour cruise, passengers are treated to a front-row seat for witnessing majestic humpback whales in their natural habitat. Quicksilver, with a capacity for up to 149 passengers, ensures safety with certified crew always on board. The catamaran also features amenities like restrooms, a waterslide, and freshwater showers, making this whale-watching experience not only exciting but also comfortable and inviting.

During the late season, as the whales are preparing to leave the Hawaiian waters, male bulls come to escort a female and her calves out of the Hawaiian channels. It is quite common to see “competitive pods” of males at this time. These are pods of males fighting amongst each other to win over and impress the females.

Go to the Maui Whale watching cruise ticket booking page, select your preferred date and time, and choose the number of tickets to buy. Keep your camera ready to capture the whales’ antics against a  picturesque backdrop of the island’s cliffs, beaches, and lush greenery. Learn about many sights and attractions that span across Hawaii, and get up-to-date information on current local events and latest activities. If you’re not sure if visiting Maui in the winter is a good idea, don’t worry! The winter is a great time to visit Maui and this article will help you prepare for your winter escape. They are believed to be promiscuous breeders, and the males do not play a parental role in the lives of their calves.

To say we are fans of Ultimate Whale Watch & Snorkel is an understatement. When we first went out on their small group raft whale watching trip, we were blown away by their friendly and passionate crew and the experience of sitting in a raft so close to the water (and the whales). I’ve seen articles stating that the best month for whale watching in Maui is November and I’m just going to guess those people have never actually been whale watching on Maui. Because if you come to Maui in November and hope to get on a whale watching tour, you’ll be disappointed. I don’t know of any tours that operate in November and whale watching from the shore in November isn’t great.

If you’re snorkeling on the coastline of a Maui beach, the water depth will most likely be too shallow for the whales. Past year sightings have been as early as October, with the whales staying in Hawaiian oceans as late as June. The peak time to watch whales in Maui is in February during mating season, with March coming in second. The clear and calm waters of Maui are a snorkeler’s paradise, providing excellent visibility and serene conditions to explore the aquatic wonders. The tours are not merely about observation; they are an educational journey, providing insights into the lives, behaviors, and conservation needs of whales.

Our onboard whale naturalists will also share fun facts about the humpback whale population and their habitat, providing a truly meaningful encounter for our guests. North Pacific humpback whales migrate to Hawaii to mate and give birth during this time every year (though whale watching in Maui during November is possible). All tours are in line with the most recent marine conservation practices.

I found Goldilocks in Antarctica with this big little ship thats just right

viking antarctica cruise

All of these activities were included in the trip cost, which isn’t always the case on other ships where special experiences like submarine rides can run about $500 a pop. Viking is known for always including one excursion per destination; in Antarctica, landings are guaranteed once per day. Still, our six days squarely in Antarctica were marvelous, and our 269-square-foot Nordic Penthouse served as a perfect home base back onboard. Viking’s usual Scandinavian style and comforts, especially ample bathrooms and oversize showers, carry over from the line’s larger ocean ships. And Nordic balconies, found only on its expedition ships, encompass more climate-controlled space inside while still opening to the outside by mechanically lowering a window to expose a veranda railing.

Viking Expedition Ships

Whale sighting on deck, is drying in a special closet; I'll use it again later on a planned landing to see our first penguins. I'm on a Viking Expeditions Cruise in Antartica, onboard Viking Polaris, the newest expedition ship from Viking and a sister to Viking Octantis; both ships debuted in 2022. Itinerary and shore excursions are subject to change and may vary by departure. To learn more about each port of call and our included as well as optional excursions, click on the individual days below. Advance bookings (number of days before the ship’s departure) for the spa, alternate restaurants, and excursions are dependent on the stateroom category you book. The 378-passenger expedition-style cruise ship — from every "Downton Abbey"-loving baby boomer's favorite ocean/river/expedition cruise line Viking — is like the Goldilocks of the South Pole. It's not so big that it can't let guests disembark onto Antarctica's snow-covered shores, nor is it so small that it can't offer creature comforts like spacious cabins, multiple dining venues and that expansive spa. In my experience, traditional landings and Zodiac cruises are still exciting enough for a full Antarctic adventure. I never once grew tired of seeing penguins in the wild, chock full of playful personality.

Margaritaville at Sea Announces Second Cruise Ship

Explore the “Last Continent,” teeming with penguins, seals, whales and other wildlife. In fact, you may consider packing just a carry-on suitcase and a personal item for this journey. Doing so negates the need to check baggage on your flights, eliminating the chance of the airline misplacing your luggage. And since Viking provides all the outer gear you’ll need, and there’s a free laundrette (washers, dryers, laundry soap, and irons), it’s easy to get by with fewer clothes as you can easily do your wash while aboard. Some stateroom classes – Nordic Junior Suite, Explorer Suite, and Owner’s Suite – provide complimentary laundry services. Near the hangar is the almost 400-square-foot science laboratory where scientists conduct research.

Emily and I shrieked and squealed with laughter as water sprayed our faces and drenched our waterproof outerwear as if we were in some sort of water park attraction. As we disembarked, the other passengers thanked us for taking the two seats in the back — the ones most likely to get drenched. The ease and comfort of Viking Polaris' onboard persona also extend to its offshore adventures.

The icy conditions made it feel like we were really on an expedition cruise, as opposed to a cruise that happened to be in a remote part of the world. That incident hasn't marred our trip at all, although the ship is sailing at a lower capacity with the cabins out of commission. And it hasn't kept the passengers from enjoying the Viking approach to cruising. Sail the icy waters of the Drake Passage, keeping watch for seabirds, whales and icebergs.

We understand that time is the greatest luxury, which is why Condé Nast Traveler mines its network of experts and influencers so that you never waste a meal, a drink, or a hotel stay wherever you are in the world. Nordic balconies, as Viking calls them, ensure everyone can hear the blow of minke whale spouts right from bed—just hit a button and the top half of floor-to-ceiling windows recedes, allowing guests to feel the fresh air from the comfort of their couch. Besides Greenland, the cruise will sail to the Canadian High Arctic before sailing to ports in the Caribbean, Peru, and exploring the Chilean glaciers before continuing to Antarctica.

My Trip

I don't know who Emily's parents thought were cruising with us aboard our ship, but it was certainly not overrun with sporty tech bros or outdoors enthusiasts accustomed to roughing it in the wilderness. The crew also demonstrated how to stomp through a boot-washing machine (imagine a car wash, with soap and spinning bristles, for your shoes), the latest in biosafety technology, before escorting me to a Zodiac. Here, two crew members helped me into the boat like I was royalty alighting from my carriage — one handing me down from the ship into the waiting grasp of another crew member standing in the Zodiac. I loved the L-shaped leather seating nook by the window, where I could curl up with a book or a room service meal. (The fried chicken on the in-cabin dining menu is divine!) I used the desk to charge my laptop, but a handy hidden drawer beneath the desktop is the perfect spot to hide your jewelry, should you use the mirror for dolling up for dinner.

Discover the nature of the Fuegian Andes; cruise the Beagle Channel in search of wildlife. The packing list below includes recommendations from my two friends based on their recent Viking Antarctica cruises. Each stateroom comes equipped with good-quality binoculars, a warming closet to dry your clothes post-excursions, heated bathroom floors, plenty of storage space, a mini-bar, a safe, 110V and 220V electrical outlets, USB and USB-C outlets, and other comforts. We cannot be held responsible for any costs you incur as a result of failing to do so.

In addition, there are various common spaces, including a well-curated library, the Living Room, the Hide, and the Explorers’ Lounge. Follow in the wake of ancient explorers, who sailed these waters in search of new lands. Grace at Manfredi's moved mountains (or maybe just tables) to accommodate our requests for group dinners, and Santosh at the World Cafe made us vegetarian chickpea curry on request and fetched me chile oil from below decks to spice up my eggs at breakfast.

Once alongside the White Continent, the captain prefers to sail the ship during daylight hours, so mornings are often spent making your way to the landing site and waiting for the expedition crew to set up. This is only a sliver of the experience on the ship, which just completed the first four sailings of its shakedown season in Antarctica. Announced in early 2020, the 378-passenger ship—which will also sail around the Great Lakes and South America in the year ahead—is the first in the brand’s new line of expedition ships (the second, Viking Polaris, will begin sailing late this summer). Just last week I sat in a Norwegian hot tub known as a badestamp, the steam rising to meet the crisp air of Antarctica that flushed my cheeks. As our ship sailed at a leisurely pace past brilliant blue icebergs, I kept an eye out for the occasional crabeater seal—usually perched on ice floes, they’d lazily lift their heads to glance over at us. I lived like that—in this delicate sweet spot where great adventure and comfort meet—for a full eleven days on board the brand-new Viking Octantis.

Always up for an adventure, I fought my fear of being completely surrounded by water as the driver took us 425 feet below the water's surface to gaze upon exotic starfish and coral. I didn't see the giant phantom jellyfish spotted earlier in the cruise — and about which Viking's expedition team published a paper in the scientific journal "Polar Research" — but I enjoyed the novel approach to sightseeing in Antarctica ... I, on the other hand, had come to the spa not for whales, but to try the Nordic bathing ritual of alternating between heated rooms like the sauna or steam room and cooling experiences like a cold water bucket dump and a snow room. It wasn't so different from the rest of my day, moving from the comfort of my cozy cabin to the extreme outdoors of the Antarctic Peninsula and now to this steamy spa. Consider that when booking, and you'll be in for a better experience over all. While excursions offered on the Octantis will vary by destination, the ship’s hangar full of toys gives passengers a glimpse of what to expect wherever they sail with the ship.

I always describe Viking as PBS at sea, so it was almost shocking to see the ship and crew lean into the NFL playoffs. To the delight of passengers, all of the games were streamed on a large screen TV in the Living Room, along with bar food such as chicken nuggets and soft pretzels. Unpredictability is the hallmark on expedition cruising, particularly in Antarctica where "pancake ice" can start forming before your eyes on a snowy day. The expedition staff sets this expectation off the bat; safety has to be the primary driver in this part of the world.

Viking Polaris has no activities team, as its officers are quick to tell you, because Antarctica provides the entertainment. On the day, I climbed up to Deck 7 (usually off-limits to guests) to find not only a crowd of passengers, but the dining team handing out cups of coffee spiked with Amarula liqueur. On my first kayak outing in Damoy Point, I watched our first penguins of the trip cavorting on the rocky shores and occasionally diving smoothly into the sea. We did more floating than paddling, but I still enjoyed playing penguin paparazzi from the sea.

Disney Cruise Fish Extenders: Everything You Need Too Know

disney cruise fish extender

Typically these Facebook Groups have the name of your ship and the date of your Cruise. 3Best practice is to allow participants 2-6 months to obtain their gifts and Fish Extenders. In order for group members to have enough time, you’ll need to finalize the groups well before sailing and get that information to them in advance.

Fish Extender Gift Tags

People love handmade Disney fish extender gifts because they are very unique and gifts they appreciate. You can find fish extender groups either on online message boards or on Facebook. Once you’ve found one for your sailing, join the group and post a message asking to take part.

What’s the Maximum Number of Participants in a Fish Extender Group?

Let's Work TogetherWe would love to work together on your next travel project! Not only is it a fun way to connect with other passengers, but it also makes for great souvenirs and memories from your trip. This is a great way to share a little piece of your culture and make your gift even more meaningful. And it can be something as simple as a keychain, a local coin, bottle openers or a postcard.

Purchased Or DIY Fish Extender Gifts?

Transporting your Fish Extender gifts safely and conveniently is important to consider when preparing for your Disney Cruise. The best way to bring all the gifts is to bring an extra suitcase for your gift bags. This will provide ample space to organize and protect the gifts during transportation.

What is Gift Price Limit?

When participating in a Fish Extender exchange on a Disney Cruise, it’s important to remember that the value of the gift is not the main focus. Think about it much like Secret Santa – the joy of giving and receiving surprises is what truly matters. To participate in a Fish Extender exchange, you must first find or create a Fish Extender group. You can do a Facebook search for groups dedicated to your Cruise so you can join the FE Exchange.

Typically, they include a pocket for each passenger in the stateroom, but you can also use something as simple as a plastic bag. How much you spend on fish extender gifts is your choice – the motto is “give what you would like to receive”. A lot of people stick to Disney magnets as they are suitably themed but quite cheap. Others may choose ornaments, but transporting them without breakage is difficult. Ultimately, the Fish Extender exchange allows you to fully embrace the Disney magic and enhance your cruise experience. It’s a joyful and memorable tradition that the Disney Cruise Line is part of, providing an opportunity to connect, surprise, and bring smiles to the faces of your fellow cruisers.

It’d be a shame to not plan ahead and not have your Fish Extender with you on your voyage. Each cabin creates a Fish Extender (you know, the door hanger to hang off the fish that we described above). Often if there are many passengers signed up, there can be several groups so you won’t have to provide as many gifts. It’s important to read the specific rules and guidelines of your group once you sign up. This is an unofficial tradition, and not every guest will participate.

These fish exchange groups are usually set up on a message board and involve between families. To make a fish extender of your own, you’ll need some flat cloth to serve as the backing, and some other material to use as pockets. Stitch the pockets onto the flat hanger, and then attach string to the top so that you can hang it over the fish. A lot of people make them, but some people prefer something a little more professional-looking than they’re capable of putting together, so will order a custom-made one from Etsy. Don’t worry, there aren’t even more complications added in by having fish extenders and seahorse extenders – they’re all called fish extenders and work in the same way.

Is There a Minimum Spend for a Fish Extender Gift?

disney cruise fish extender

Either way, make sure you give yourself enough time to have the FE in hand before your cruise. This nursery organizer is is a great starting point for the crafting-deficient. Add a few ribbons and Mickey silhouettes and bam, you have yourself one beautiful Fish extender. Remember, this is meant to hang off the Fish and not the door (also because Disney no longer allows door-hanging items), simply replace the hooks with sturdy rope or ribbon.

Want to learn more about fish extenders so you can decide if you want to participate? The FE culture is driven by DIY, and any crafting skills you might have will come in handy as you build your family's bag. That being said, you can always order an FE -- even one that's personalized for your family -- through Etsy for $10 to $25; the more elaborate the design, the more expensive it will be.

After boarding, we hung out our FE with smug satisfaction and waited for the gifts to roll in. The first night, we received a cute surprise when several wooden magnets popped up on the door. This is another way to add some extra magic to your cruise experience and it’s a much smaller investment to participate in. Most people will pack their Disney Cruise fish extenders away on the last evening to prepare their luggage for disembarkment, so aim to deliver before lunch on the final full day on board. One of the most important things to consider when choosing fish extender gifts is how easy they are to pack and transport.

If you’re skilled with a sewing machine, many families like to sew their own fish extender holders. There are many tutorials available online that can guide you through the process. Make sure to check in closer to sailing to ensure all cabins are still cruising or participating, to ensure no one ends up missing out or spending money they don’t need to spend. The list was then created and sent to each participant in a Facebook group chat for reference when planning gifts.

In determining this list, we evaluated numerous customer reviews and considered whether the cruise line has collected any accolades in recent years. We’ve gathered cruises in all size categories (from a couple of hundred passengers to nearly 5,000), as ship size is often one of the biggest factors when selecting a cruise. We’ve also called attention to cruise options that do an impressive job of showcasing nature, offering local experiences, providing endless onboard entertainment, or catering to foodies or luxury travelers. Travel the Inside Passage on 10 or 11-day Alaska cruises from San Francisco and allow the natural landscapes to inspire your day’s adventures. If you want a more active trip in less touristed areas, a great choice would be a small-ship expedition line, including Alaska specialists such as Alaskan Dream Cruises and UnCruise Adventures. Some lines also offer Alaska cruisetours that venture into Canada's Yukon, including a few Holland America tours that combine half a cruise with a cruisetour that starts or ends in Skagway. You'll have four sea days (for example, two days from San Francisco to Juneau) plus a day of scenic cruising at a spot like Tracy Arm (Twin Sawyer Glaciers), Endicott Arm, Hubbard Glacier or Glacier Bay National Park. The waters before you enter the Inside Passage can be calm, rough or anything in between, depending on when you go. If you book a Gulf of Alaska voyage, you'll also enjoy exploring parts of the Inside Passage and its ports that could include a mix of Juneau, Skagway, Sitka, Ketchikan, Haines and Icy Strait Point. Popular Inside Passage ports of call include Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Haines and Skagway.

The key to planning the perfect adventure is finding the right cruise for your personality, budget, and preferences. For those voyagers seeking to sail from Southern California all the way up the Pacific coast to Alaska, try a new 16-day roundtrip Inside Passage voyage from Los Angeles. Roughly 1.5 million people visit Alaska on a cruise ship each year, according to the Cruise Line International Association Alaska. A great choice for fans of smaller, more intimate ships, Seabourn’s Odyssey holds 450 passengers and treats them to a personal, all-inclusive luxury experience. Viking Ocean Cruises recently nabbed a 2023 World’s Best Award in the midsize-ship ocean cruise lines category, coming in at first place for the second year in a row. The line’s identical ocean ships offer a sleek Scandinavian design, which only enhances the tranquil atmosphere on board.

These include the English pub, Schooner Bar, Chops Grille, Izumi, and the Windjammer buffet. Not to mention, there’s the indoor Solarium, plenty of whirlpools, and an outdoor pool to enjoy while soaking in the views. Sister ship, Norwegian Bliss, will be joining Encore in Seattle again this year.

Depending on the tour itinerary you choose, you might visit Seward and the Kenai Peninsula, Alyeska, Talkeetna, Anchorage and Fairbanks — as well as spend one to three nights in Denali National Park. For these itineraries, you'll need to fly into or out of Anchorage and take a train or bus to/from the cruise departure ports, which can take an hour or two. Instead of taking a long and expensive flight to Anchorage or Fairbanks, you can choose a cruise that sails round-trip from Seattle or Vancouver (note, you won't be able to tack on a post-cruise land trip to Denali if you do this). Restaurant prices in Alaska can be high, but a cruise bundles meals, accommodations and transportation into one price that, with sales, can be cheaper than you'd think. The Discovery Princess had her naming ceremony in April of 2022, so she’s a brand-new addition to the line’s fleet.

Dining options include room service, table service, quick bites, and adults-only meals. Go back in time to the Klondike Gold Rush on cruises to Skagway, Alaska, once the primary gateway to the goldfields. Cross Alaska’s massive ice shelves, crystal fjords, and fascinating marine wildlife off your bucket list with itineraries that conveniently depart from Seattle and Vancouver.

As a traveler, I am just as comfortable bicycling through Italian olive groves and SCUBA diving the wall of sharks in French Polynesia as I am sipping bubbles in a Champagne house and dining at Michelin-starred restaurants. Thus, Viking is our pick of the top Alaska cruises 2023 for luxury travelers. There are also several different cruise and land tour packages from Vancouver to Anchorage available ranging from 9 days to 14 days.

Shore excursions can be added to the trip to round out your adventure in the Last Frontier. Go salmon fishing in Juneau, explore the Klondike Highway by bike in Skagway, or see a Native dance performance in Ketchikan. The Lotus Spa, a fitness center, and a sports deck round out some of the other onboard featurs. Don’t forget to take a stroll on the SeaWalk — a glass-paneled promenade that reaches 28 feet over the ship’s edge – while on board.

Westerdam is also a slightly smaller ship than Eurodam, and as a result, its demographics on any given sailing are more likely to skew toward a retired crowd. To the extent that families with younger kids book Holland America ships, they are more likely to book one of its larger vessels. The best Alaska cruises out of Seattle for retirees, in our view, are the sailings offered by Holland America on both the 1,964-passenger Westerdam and 2,104-passenger Eurodam.

The 2,446-passenger ship sails to similar destinations as Carnival Legend – Bermuda, Bahamas, and Eastern Caribbean – with slightly different itineraries. However, with the recent increase in volcanic activity on the islands, it’s crucial to be well-informed and prepared. It is crucial to stay informed and monitor these updates for your safety and well-being. As a visitor with respiratory conditions, I take precautions in Hawaii.
